What are "Live TeleClasses"

  • Live Teleclasses are a very convenient way to participate in a learning environment with a facilitator or instructor who is often an expert in their field, without the necessity of traveling to a specific location.
  • These types of classes are a great advantage especially for those whose schedules, physical location or weather would otherwise prohibit their participation.
  • Teleclasses are often referred to as virtual communities and many universities and colleges now offer standard courses via this method.

Here is how they work:

A TeleClass is a kind of conference call. This type of conference call takes place on a special bridge line which can host small to large numbers of class participants at the same time. At the scheduled time of your class each participant dials a regular phone number, follows the prompts to add a special PIN (Personal Identification Number) to access your class.

The phone number and PIN are sent to your e-mail address shortly after you register for a teleclass or teleclass series. The e-mail will also give you instructions for the Teleclass. This phone number will be a regular long distance call for most participants. The cost of the call would be whatever your long distance carrier rates are. There are no other service or phone fees.

Format for a TeleClass. Once on the call you will be welcomed by the TeleClass Facilitator(s) / Instructor(s). The TeleClass begins promptly within a few minutes of the scheduled class time. Teleclasses are often similar to attending an interesting lecture that is followed by a Question and Answer period. Some Teleclasses may be more interactive than others. It really depends on the style of the instruction and the type of material being taught.

If this if your first time taking a TeleClass, you may wonder if and how it works. It just does. You have to give it a try. You can listen in and absorb and/or engage in the discussion when appropriate to do so. For some classes you may be asked to put your phone in mute mode by pressing certain numbers on your phone handset. Doing this will screen out any background noise that may occur in the place you are calling from.

Most TeleClass sessions last an hour. Some meet one time only, others meet weekly for a specific number of sessions. Some may be free or introductions to a subject, while others will be for a fee. Fee based classes are paid in advance through the website.

You do not need a computer in order to participate in a teleclass. However sometimes an instructor has pertinent class materials they will send via e-mail prior to the beginning of the teleclass. If you do not have e-mail you will need to make arrangements in advance to receive them another way, usually by fax.
